This is the second year I am participating in this fundraiser for Joshua's House Hospice in Sacramento. Artists were asked to use the shoe as symbol. I decided to use slippers, same thing, right. I choose slippers because it was always a little heart wrenching to see homeless folks walking through town on worn and torn slippers. I added the bottom photo so you can see what the slipper looked half way through demolition! The bodies of the two Gate Keepers are made from the fluffy topside of the slipper. I used parts of the inner soles to make the green landscaping and the while cloud. The flying, steampunky, angel winged images on the upper left utilize the big, black buttons on the slippers. The furry, fuzzy slippers were a bit difficult to prepare for paint. Lots of fabric stiffener and gesso finally harden the slippers to my satisfaction.

So the idea is that the Gate Keepers will guide those homeless in hospice to their next life; that is what I thought about as I made the above assembled paintings. They are 3D as the bodies protrude out from the canvas. This project was great fun even those I had a limited paint palette! The auction is a silent bid and I am hoping these two lovelies bring in donations. I will not be at the 8/11 reception but if you are family or a friend you can join me at the artist reception on 8/9 5-8pm.

The above necklace was finished just in time for the membership show at Blue Line Art Gallery in Roseville, CA. The large stone is jasper which sits below an oval labradorite cabochon. The porcelain white raven cabochon were made by Laura Mears. There are five shell pieces covered with faceted glass. I titled this piece "Transformations". The raven is a symbol of transformation to the Native American Indians. I look at these white Ravens and see white, to me, a positive transformation into death or another positive place.

In the past two years I have lost several loved ones. It has been difficult. I view death, how ever it may come to oneself, as positive, taking an individual to a higher place. When making this necklace I thought often about loved ones lost; I thought about how they are physically gone but will always be with me in my heart. For me, his is a very special piece!

So, I've put these losses behind me and am happily creating again!. I participated in the Sac Kiwanis Art Fiesta a few weeks ago. It felt so good to connect with customers again. Fantastic show which I look forward to doing annually.

Anyhow, it's good to be back to business!

While in Tuscon last January, I found a few Boulder Turquoise cabochons. Boulder Turquoise is also referred to as Ribbon Turquoise. Lapidarists cut the stone so the turquoise presented in a thin strip through its host stone. I made two necklaces and a pair of earrings. the necklace above has gone ton the Artery along with the earrings. I will keep the second necklace as I really love this stone! It looks so naturals if this is how you might come across turquoise while digging! The fringe is twisted. This is the first time I attempted twisted fringe (which I have always admired and wondered how they did that!). Twisting the fringe is a bit tedious but the look is well worth it! The blues and greens in the beadwork complement the turquoise in the cabochon which changes from a deep green to a bright blue. Lots of fun making these necklaces!

I took break from beading to create this collage, "Kickin' It" for the Art and Sole Fundraiser in Scaramento. The funds raised through this auction of artwork will be donated to Joshuas's House, a soon to be built hospice for the homeless. I had soooo much fun with this project. I have been a fan of Finnabair for a while and wanted to create a collage/assemblage using various gels and heavy past mediums. I used my sons shoes and that is his portrait in the collage. For the portrait I used Golden GAC800 medium to make a photo transfer which was then attached to the canvas using Golden medium as a sort of glue. I also used Golden products to stiffen the shoelaces and upper shoe, which was used to create a hat. There are all kinds of components used in the collage; vintage keys and watch parts, computer circuits, vintage bottle caps, brass findings, clock hands, and a few small photo transfers. Anyhow, it was great fun and I looked forward to creating more collages/assemblages in the future. Amaterasus' Messenger was display at Blue Line Arts Gallery in Roseville, CA during the month of March. The show was entitled
"To The Touch" and selected participants presented work that the viewer would want to touch and feel. In this collar, I surrounded a beautiful and large blue agate with pheasant feathers. Everything is stitched on metallic grey lambskin, glove quality leather....very luxurious! The fringe really makes the collar quite luscious; it was a last minute decision to add the fringe. The collar closure is a vintage brass button that looks great with the piece!

Amaterasu is a Japanese sun goddess who often used pheasants as her messengers, thus the name of this collar. It was great fun creating a piece of jewelry for a gallery show and really pushed me out of my artistic routine!
This necklace was made for a "Black and White" show which ran through the month of February at the Pence Gallery in Davis, CA. It was quite difficult to make this piece work. In the beading world no two whites are alike and so it was a bit of a challenge to finds a group of whites that worked well together! The necklace has a wonderful Art Deco feel to it.
The square cabochons are Onyx surrounded by longer frosty white bugle beads and and even longer black bugle beads. The center piece is finished off with a spiral rope of Swarovski white opal bicone crystals and black glass beads. the closure is a vintage black glass button that works well with the piece.

I am very pleased with the results!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10297378863774291437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-339588014743174698.post-34347282040078426392016-08-01T14:07:00.000-07:002016-08-01T14:07:32.585-07:00Hey, I'm still here!!I will not bore you with the reason for my inactivty on this blog..suffice to say that my life has been full of many surprises which have pulled me in all sorts of directions! I have kept up with my bead embroidery but decided pull out of one gallery which represented my work. I felt like a change was needed to prevent further stagnation in my work. I still sell my work at the Artery in Davis, CA. I am considering taking steps towards on line selling but I cringe at the thought of how much time I would have to spend on social media in order to get my business moving on line. I am also considering participating in high end fine craft shows; this would mean I would have to upgrade my booth appearance. So my brain is plodding along looking for new creative direction. In the meantime I've gotten myself into the quality not quantity state of mind as I pursue new ideas I have for my jewelry designs. Here are a few photos of new work. Enjoy!

Such a busy year so far! In April I was accepted into the Artery this past April; the Artery is another cooperative gallery in Davis, CA. In June my daughter graduated college and began college a few weeks ago. In June I went on an 18 day tour of Europe and fell in love with Europeans. There is no truth to the comment that Parisians are icy towards Americans; I found Paris to be very welcoming.

In August my mom passed away from cancer; everything happened very quickly. I miss her a great deal. Every morning I warm up at the gym playing Cold Plays song "Always In My Head" and give my mom a few minutes....just she and I and memories. Shortly after mom's death we placed my dad in assisted living memory care...that was very difficult but the right decision; he is happy and socializing.

Anyhow, I am finding myself asking...."what was I doing before all this happened"! I have been busy at both galleries and have not posted or taken very many photos:( I converted to Mac Air and iPhone 6 this year and haven't figured out how to get photos on Blogger. I am not very astute in computer technology. Hopefully I will have more photos soon! In the meantime I am off to bead!

Sometime, during the busy fall months, I made three pieces of jewelry to enter into the Nirvana Bead Design Contest. The two necklaces above were entered under the "Button" category and the earrings were entered under the "Earrings" category, of course! The silver plated leaf in the earrings were purchased by me from Nirvana and help create a stunning pair of earrings. The center necklace has been created almost completely from Nirvana beads and buttons . The center necklace and a bracelet (not show were both selected as a winner under the "Button" categories. As there is only one winner, Nirvana is selecting one or the other (necklace or bracelet) as the winner; final results out tomorrow. And what, you may ask, is the prize...a hefty gift certificate from Nirvana to purchase more beads, of course......every beaders dream! Nirvana Beads is a great company with very down to earth folks running the business. I found them when I fell in love with Czech buttons and wanted to start using these buttons in my designs. As I searched for a wholesaler of these Czech buttons I cam across Nirvana and have purchased my Czech beads and buttons from them ever since. What really makes Nirvana Beads special is the fact that they donate a portion of their profits to help those suffering from natural and man made disasters...how cool is that! So I support Nirvana, Nirvana supports those in need and it is all good! I like that. Anyhow, the two necklaces above use Nirvana Czech buttons as focal points. I have been asked to create a necklace similar to the bottom blue necklace using the same button is white, with salmon and gold accents and angel wings....more edgy. I will post a picture when I am done...the wedding is in April. Life is good!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10297378863774291437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-339588014743174698.post-14976411196175307492013-08-14T15:24:00.002-07:002013-08-14T15:24:14.303-07:00Beaded Collars...or rather Bibs.

Earlier this year I created several beaded collars...projects that I had been thinking about for quite some time.I had great fun working up the color scheme in these collars. The larger collar is a magnificent piece to wear and has the impression of Egyptian fashion. I imagine how grand Cleopatra must have felt wearing those wonderful beaded collars, sipping fine wine! I started out with a beautiful but bright Purple Sea Sediment Jasper. I decided I did not want to play up the bright Purple and focus on all the complimentary tones found in the stone. I added some vintage glass cabochons and pearl to give a sheen to the collar at various places.

The two smaller collars were a bit more difficult primarily due to the small space. At their widest point, the collar is not quite 2 inches. I did not want to have the space on each side of the center cabochons to be boring and so after pondering various ideas I cam up with the final designs. The lighter collar has a small, teardrop cabochon of Ocean Jasper. I love Ocean Jasper and all it's variations. It will often have circulars shapes indicating something bubbled up from the deep ocean floor and solidified! I had to work at keeping the Ocean Jasper collar light and white. I rarely use white in my beaded pieces so this was a challenge. The animal print type beading just happened, I did not start out with a plan on how to fill space. I love the way the collar turned out! The other small collar has a aquamarine blue Swarovski cabochon. The frosted glass leaves to the side are also vintage, very unique.

I had great fun creating these collars. They are currently on view at Artist Collaborative Gallery in Sacramento.
Lot's of chaos at the home front these past 9 months but life seems to be stabilizing for now : ) Blogger has changed quite a bit since my last post and so I am hoping I can figure out how to post photos!! I am severely computer illiterate! I have had quite a few custom orders this year. I decided that custom work is difficult to do while still keeping up inventory for the gallery....but, I managed to get through it all and have worked out a system...just need a bigger studio! I am beginning to understand my market a bit better and am seeing a sales cycle: Embellished bead work sells well for the holidays and special occasions while Steam punk is definitely more for the casual, everyday buyer. Bead work is definitely more labor intensive and gratifying while Steam punk is quick, instant results.
I will present these at the Sacramento Arts Festival next weekend. I have been creating alot of smaller pieces to sell over the holidays. I miss bead embroidery as I have not had much time to devote to this activity. I will beging making a few holiday ornaments for the gallery and then start on some larger embroidered projects. I am anxious to dive into something new.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10297378863774291437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-339588014743174698.post-91208572307156002822011-06-13T20:29:00.000-07:002011-06-13T20:29:26.820-07:00BeadpunkWorking on Beadpunk or rather steampunk with beading embellsihment. I like "Geisha Gal"..turned out very nice. I love the odd shapes of various watch parts. I am busy working on 6 pieces at the time. There are many stages...lots of time waitng for glue to dry, cleaning the many. many, very small vintage watch parts... so I find it best to work on several projects at once. Anyhow, thought I'd share my Geisha Gal as she is a good representation of my direction with Steam Punk jewelryAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10297378863774291437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-339588014743174698.post-52410358425989182802011-06-05T10:45:00.000-07:002011-06-05T10:45:59.784-07:00Variations on Steampunk JewelryI've busy working on new work for my featured artist show at the gallery this July. I am trying something totally new..steampunk and found objects jewelry. I did alot of searching but have been able to find some fantastic old watches(which I am taking apart), keys, stamps and more, My new works is a u-turn from my usual bead embroidered pieces. I love the challenge of trying to get all these components to work together. I am also finally getting to work on some new techniques which I have put on hold since joining the gallery. Often I feel very restricted on what I can show at the collaborative gallery as I have been juried in for beadwork; this prevents me from exhibiting other jewelry types at the gallery.

On top of being featured artist, I have committed to showing two new pieces at the Folsom B of A gallery in July. Needless to say the next month will be busy and house cleaning will be put on hold(what else is new!).
I am enjoying all the newly found creatiity this Steampunk project has brought on. My mind is racing with new ideas...i could really use more time! Looking forward to some chill time in mid July

Anyhow, I need to get busy cleaning those watch parts! I have a few photos t post but the quality is poor. I usually Take my photos in diffused sunlight but it has been so gloomy and dark that I had little sunlight to light up my work.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10297378863774291437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-339588014743174698.post-89895037410855044732011-05-09T15:13:00.001-07:002011-05-09T15:35:54.250-07:00It's been way too long!I cannot believe how busy I have been with "other" things! I feel pulled in many different directions these days. I am attempting to produce as much new work as I can for the El Dorado Hills Spring Artist Tour...May 21st and 22nd and then also for my Featured Artist Show at the Artist Collaborative Gallery this July. Unfortunately, my work takes time...alot of time. I am exploring new bracelets and am posting photos I took of 2 newer designs. One of the photos is of a blue button bracelet which I've made a duplicate. The second bracelet will be embellished with crystal and pearls. The fringe bracelet is really cool and fun to wear. All those beads give the bracelet a hefty weight. The toggles on both these bracelets were very time consuming....tension on the beads has to be just right or the toggle will be soft but if you get it right the toggles are beautiful, strong structures.

Yesterday I received some beautiful, soft leather I had ordered. Black and brown for some men's cuff designs(women also) and a lovely matte gold leather to make a beaded collar with...can't wait!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10297378863774291437noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-339588014743174698.post-81702601691028395652011-02-13T20:43:00.000-08:002011-02-13T20:43:07.219-08:00Dragonfly SymbolismOften I use Dragonfly cabochons in my work Many of us are intrigued by the dragonfly which is a member of the Odonatu Family. Odonatu comes from the Greek word for teeth. The drafonfly and other Odonatu do not have teeth but do have incerdibly powerful jaws used to crush their prey.

Dragonflies symbolize maturity and depth of character. When show hovering over water they represent going betond the surface, looking into the deeper inplications and aspects of life. It's agility presents a sense of power and poise that comes with age. The iridescence of the dragonfly is associated with self realization through removal of self doubt. The dragon fly lives a short life, only a few months. This reminds us to live for the moment, live life to it's fullest and live your life without regret. Love those dragonflies!
I have only completed twe pieces this year...soooo busy with other responsibilities. The first necklace I finished is a longer (25"-26") piece with a beaded blue/purple dragon cabochon on a spiral rope of Swarovski amythest AB crystals and blue grey pearls..very nice piece. The second is earthy. I used distressed green leather. It is a bead emroidered medallion. The center stone is Peruvian Opal and the smaller stones are turqouise...all toped with shimmery gold pearl. I used a teal leather cord to hold the medallion. I am moving towards earthy. The holidays are over. Time to put away the bling and start making "everyday wear" . I have plans for "dude wear" just need to get it made before my ideas slip away.
I am participating in a studio tour this may and really need to get moving.Time to go. Toodles!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10297378863774291437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-339588014743174698.post-20320949521156989092011-01-10T21:40:00.000-08:002011-01-10T21:40:47.145-08:00Getting Technical Here!Today I posted a backround photo for my blog A few minor difficulties but I like the look okay I changed the template so my bog title would stand out upon the detail of my beading. The detail is from a bead embroiderd collar I made last year. It is now being wore by a lovely southern belle, somewhere in Georgia....sold at the gallery : ) When I made this collar I was rushed. I made it to place in a gallery show which previewed art for a studio tour. It came out quite nice and I plan to make at least 2 more this spring(God help me !). The collar was laborious taking easily 25+ hours to make...Ahhhh what would I do without MUSIC!...and my dogs, who faithfully sat by my side the entire time I worked on this piece!
Anyhow, today I give myself a pat on the back for getting my blog heading to look so fancy!
Nitey Nite All!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10297378863774291437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-339588014743174698.post-50545653130234243772011-01-07T21:18:00.000-08:002011-01-07T21:18:20.641-08:00Today is the first day of the rest of my life...as a blogger!I have finally taken the first step into the online abyss. Yes..to me the internet worls is an abyss. I am an artist and I have been creating jewelry for 9 or 10 years. The past 2 or 3 years I have focused on bead embroifered jewelry and off loom beading techniques. I am currently a member of the Artist Collaborative Gallery in Old Sac California. Actually, I am the newly elected president of this collaborative. How I got to be president...........I am not surprised as I always seem to be saving the ship! What I see in my involvement with the gallery is that alot of artists never push themselves out of their comfort zones and when we start that attempt to sell out work we become even more restricted..because we want to sell our work. We want to sell our work and buy more stuff to make more stuff and thus we artists never really become rich until we are dead..lol! But it is all in good fun and self discovery.

Like many other artists, I'm sure, I go to bed every nite extremely spent and as soon as my head hit the pillow my mind starts to swimming in creative thoughts. I have such a strong urge to push myself farther with my jewelry pieces. I am totally in love with crystals! Shiny, colorful iridescent little gems they are! I want to mix theses gems with rough metals and soft, supple leather...........interpetations of life...water, mountains life....that is how I see these materials. I am so intense about thing, aren't I ! Hmm, mustn't take myself too seriously as them the fun will disolve.

I have 2 wonderful kids and a fantastic husband. My life revolves around theirs. This blog shall be a diary of my art and whatever else passes my day. I have no idea how to blog...post photos, add links. change the format. etc. So today I begin my adventures in blogging.....along with new attempt in more sculpural beading and continued advancement in bead embroidery. This should be fun. Wish much success! Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10297378863774291437noreply@blogger.com2
